The 2015-16 Class of the ACE Fellows Program just concluded their Fellowship year at institutions across the country, becoming a part of the integral process of building institutional capacity in the higher education leadership ranks.

Charles R. Middleton, president emeritus of Roosevelt University, writes that diversity and inclusion are essential to assuring long-term success for higher education institutions. And it is clear that we cannot achieve our maximum potential without taking advantage of the considerable talent and commitment to our institutions that LGBTQ employees, students, alumni and community leaders bring.

Bob Shea, senior fellow at the National Association of College and University Business Officers, sat on the ACE2016 panel “Higher Education Business Models: Leading with Data to Deliver Results.” During the Q&A, the common theme emerged of how to get started on the difficult work of moving to a sustainable economic model. ACE2016 closed the final plenary at ACE2016 with a keynote address by Anna Maria Chávez, chief executive officer of the Girl Scouts of the USA, who examined how to be a successful leader in today’s ever-changing and globalized world.

Academics often wonder about the future of higher education as technological changes arrive at an increasingly fast rate. A session at ACE2016 on “The Future of the Academic Enterprise” staked the claim that evolution in the academic core will drive the most meaningful change.

The sociocultural lines drawn between college and university campuses, the communities within which they reside, and society at large are never brightly drawn.
